The GBI says 26-year-old, Donquez Thomas of Lithonia, died at a local hospital from his injuries.
DeKalb County police officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance near Central Drive at approximately 8:43 a.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived, they located Thomas holding a handgun and forcibly pushing a woman down the street by her clothing while she carried a baby. Officers ordered Thomas to release the woman and child and drop his weapon.
According to state investigators, Thomas refused to comply with the commands. A DKPD officer then shot him.
Neither the woman, the baby nor any of the responding officers were injured during the incident, according to the GBI. Thomas’ body was taken to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
Officials are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the GBI Atlanta Regional Investigative Office in Conyers at 770-388-5019. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 800-597-TIPS (8477) or through the agency’s website.
Once the GBI finishes its active investigation, the completed case file will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
