Man slips off boat trying to grab hat. He never resurfaced from Lake Lanier

Lake Lanier drownings A man drowned in the Lake on Saturday.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County man died on Saturday in a Lake Lanier drowning.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources identified the victim as 71-year-old Kim Gregory Battle of Buford.

Game wardens received a call around 3:28 p.m. Saturday about a drowning near Three Sisters Island. A witness says Battle was driving his boat when he lost his hat. As he went to grab it from the back of the boat, Battle slipped and fell into Lake Lanier.

He never resurfaced.

Forsyth County and Hall County deputies, firefighters and dive teams responded along with DNR to begin a SONAR search. They found Battle’s body in 11 feet of water around 5:30 p.m. and pulled him out at 5:46 p.m.
