Man crashes into phone pole, dies

ALPHARETTA, Ga.,None — A man died in a fiery crash in Alpharetta on Wednesday night.

The crash happened on Cumming Street near Clairmont Avenue around 11:40 p.m. Alpharetta police said a man driving a Toyota Corolla ran off the road and into a telephone pole. A nearby resident said it sounded like a gunshot.

"We heard a huge boom," Cody Chengis said.

The car caught on fire, and the driver was trapped behind the wheel, police said. Chengis used his girlfriend's phone to call 911.

"I stood about ten feet away from it and didn't know if should go in or not," he said. "The car was on fire. I didn't know what to do."

Channel 2 Action News was at the scene as firefighters pulled the driver from the mangled car. When medics rushed the man to North Fulton Hospital, he was in critical condition, but overnight, he died from his injuries. He was identified as 36-year-old Jason Dapice, of Alpharetta.

"It was a really horrific scene here," Chengis said.

Police have not yet determined whether slick roads from the rain caused the crash. Neighbors said there have been several serious crashes on Cumming Street.

"This is probably about the fourth one we had in the last two years. This is the most horrific one we've seen yet," Chengis said.
