Lightning strike sends tree crashing into DeKalb County house

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County couple is still in shock after a lightning strike split a tree at their house and caused a small fire in their garage.

Ernest Walker can hardly believe how he and his wife didn't get hurt when a lightning bolt split a tree in half and sparked a fire at his house in Ellenwood.

"We just kept rolling toward the back of the house and the tree fell, but not far enough to do any damage to us," Walker said.

Walker was sitting in his garage with his wife when the lightning struck at around 7:30 p.m., causing a fireball that spread to the outside of his garage.

The tree caught fire, exploded and sent debris everywhere.

The debris damaged nine vehicles and caused minor damage to Walker's neighbor's house.

Walker says he's thankful he and his wife weren't any closer to the tree when it came crashing down.
