NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A woman says it was a mixed blessing after a tree crashed onto her house in Newton County.
Crews worked to remove the tree Wednesday afternoon from the house in Oxford.
The woman who lives in this house was not home when the tree fell after Tuesday’s storms that tore through. The oak tree fell around 9 p.m.
One neighbor described it as a loud bang. She thought lightning struck somewhere near and then the power went out temporarily. That loud bang was the tree that crashed.
Casey Tree Experts say there’s a lot they can tell from the exposed root ball of the tree.
“The root ball is about a third of the size it should be. It should be about 3 times the size of this but it's all from root rot all around the entire root system was root rotted,” said Joe Gresham from Casey Tree Experts.
Officials estimate the tree weighed between 20,000 to 30,000 pounds.
