BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. — Gov. Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp visited Southeast Georgia on Tuesday to recognize firefighters who battled the state’s historic spring wildfires and announce new funding for fire departments impacted by the blazes.
During a stop in Brantley County, Kemp announced $105,000 in special wildfire suppression grants for seven fire departments in the counties hardest hit by this year’s wildfire season.
The event brought together firefighters from Echols County, Clinch County and Brantley County, along with local officials and representatives from the Georgia Forestry Commission.
Kemp thanked first responders for their efforts to contain and extinguish massive wildfires that burned across Southeast Georgia earlier this year.
The funding is intended to help departments strengthen their wildfire response capabilities and recover from the costs associated with battling the fires.
Johnny Sabo, director of the Georgia Forestry Commission, joined Kemp in recognizing firefighters who worked on the front lines during the historic wildfire season.
The announcement took place at the Nahunta Fire Department, where state leaders emphasized the importance of supporting local departments that played a critical role in protecting homes, businesses and communities.
