ROME, Ga. — The Rome City Schools district is mourning the “tragic loss” of a middle school student.
Daelyn Godfrey, a 13-year-old student at Rome Middle School, died on Sept. 23, according to his obituary.

“Counselors and support staff are on-site and available for students, faculty, and staff needing assistance in processing this sudden loss,” the district said in a statement. “Our thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, and loved ones.”
Daelyn played tenor saxophone in the marching band and belonged to West Rome Baptist Church. His family called him a “pioneer in his own way.”
“Whether he was learning something different, discovering a new interest, or simply finding his own way of doing things, Daelyn never quite followed the crowd. He had a personality all his own,” his family wrote.

A celebration of his life is set for 6 p.m. on Oct. 4 at West Rome Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 4 at the church.
The obituary asks people attending the service to wear their favorite hoodie in Daelyn’s memory.
