Body cam video shows Duluth officers help save woman who crashed car while having seizure

DULUTH, Ga. — A local police department is thankful none of its officers were hurt after a driver T-boned one of them on his way home.

Officers told Channel 2′s Matt Johnson that it took a lot of teamwork to help stop the driver who lost control not once but twice.

Body camera video captured the chaotic moments after the crash. The other driver was a woman who said she has a history of seizures.

Duluth police say that’s what caused her to run a red light at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Abbots Bridge Road last Monday morning and T-bone an officer in his patrol car.

“He was able to get himself out and assist that person,” Cpl. Ted Sadowski with the Duluth Police Department said.

When other officers arrived, the woman appeared to black out with her foot on the gas.

“Hit the brakes! Hey, wake up! Hit the brakes!” you hear the officers yell on the video.

Another officer used his patrol car to stop her car so officers could get to her and get her medical treatment.

It all happened at the same intersection where a convicted drunk driver crashed into Officer Ricky Porter leaving him with serious injuries in 2021.

“Now we have another officer hit at the same intersection,” Sadowski said.

Sadowski said he’s thankful that what happened this time didn’t leave another officer with more serious injuries.

“We’re just real fortunate that besides damage to property, that everyone was OK,” Sadowski said.

Two Duluth police cars ended up damaged. The crash remains under investigation.
