Georgia Tech begins phased move-in starting with first-year students this weekend

It’s move-in day for Georgia Tech students, but with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the process is much different compared to years past.

Channel 2 Action News was there as first-year students began to move into their residence halls Saturday. The university is using a 2-day phase approach to welcome the new students to campus.

Georgia Tech said it’s made every change with coronavirus safety protocols in mind. Many tasks are being done through a mobile app from reserving a move-in time to reserving a spot inside the dining hall.

Another change this year is the new drive-thru check in. Each student will have their temperature checked. From there, students get a welcome packet with important things inside.

“They receive their Buzz card, they receive their room key and then directions on how to navigate campus,” said Sheree Gibson, Georgia Tech’s director of residence life.

Students who decide to live on campus also will receive masks as part of their welcome kits. Face coverings will be required in campus buildings and where social distancing isn’t possible.

Students will notice new safety signs as they navigate their new home, designating how many people can be in a room.

“There are directional signs. There are occupancy signs. So that students are aware what is expected of them,” Gibson said.

Channel 2 Action News spoke with a few students who moved in Saturday, who said the move-in process went smoothly.

“I feel very safe. The whole tech community has been working like a well oiled machine,” student Landon Wilson said. “I thought it was going to be a lot more stressful.”

Sunday will be the second day of move-in for first-year students. Upperclassmen can start moving back in Thursday Aug. 13.

Georgia Tech plans to have classes in person and virtual teaching, that will include limited in classroom instruction.

As part of the fall plan, each course and section will be designated as residential (in-person with physical distancing), hybrid with limited in-person attendance, or remote. Fall classes resume August 17.
