GEORGIA — A Georgia medical equipment company and its owners have agreed to pay $825,000 to resolve allegations that they submitted false claims to Medicare, officials announced Monday.

Crown Medical Solutions LLC and its owners, Michelle and Philanzo King, supplied durable medical equipment, including knee braces, heel stabilizers, and back braces.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the government alleged Crown and its owners billed Medicare between Nov. 1, 2017, and April 30, 2019, for equipment that was not medically necessary and/or had not been properly prescribed by a physician.
The settlement was based on the defendants’ ability to pay, according to the DOJ.

The case also involved a whistleblower lawsuit filed under the False Claims Act. Karen Martinelli will receive $123,750 from the settlement.
The government said the settlement resolves allegations only. There has been no determination of liability.
The case was handled by the Justice Department’s Civil Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia.
