LaGRANGE, Ga. — A man is dead and another man was shot by police following a confrontation early Monday morning in LaGrange.
The GBI said 19-year-old Patrick Reeves was shot and wounded by police after he killed his sister’s boyfriend, 29-year-old Jazmen Glanton, just after 1 a.m.
According to a news release, Glanton was involved in a fight with his girlfriend, Phatrial Simms, 25. Reeves called police as the couple fought, the release said.
When police arrived, they saw Reeves shoot Glanton. Police shot Reeves in the arm after he refused to follow “verbal commands,” the release said.
Channel 2′s Aaron Diamant is in LaGrange, where he talked to neighbors at the Tall Pines Apartments who were dismayed with the violence.
“A bunch of mess. It needs to stop,” Roy Lipscomb said. “Theses are folks losing their lives over senseless stuff.”
Another neighbor, who asked not to be identified, showed Diamant where a bullet came through her apartment window and into a bedroom, narrowly missing her parents.
“Bullets, they fly,” she said. “Stray bullets can go in a wall somewhere.”
This is the eighth officer-involved shooting in 2020.
Diamant sat down with Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vic Reynolds in March after Georgia’s 23rd officer-involved shooting of 2019. The GBI database shows agents were called to a total of 84 last year and 93 in 2018.
“We’re pouring a lot of man hours, a lot of time for these agents to work these cases,” Reynolds said. “Right now, we’re handling it.”
For people at Tall Pines Apartments, the violence is out of control.
“You can’t do nothing but pray around here," a neighbor said. "That’s all we can do is pray that things get better, and hopefully it will.”
