Ga. man killed by police after threatening to burn down home with 2-year-old inside, GBI says

CENTERVILLE, Ga. — The GBI is investigating after a man who barricaded himself inside a home with his three children and threatened to burn the home down was shot and killed by police.

The Centerville Police Department responded to a domestic dispute call on Village Walk in Centerville on Saturday.

When officers arrived, they found Shawn Michael Evanuk, 48, in the driveway. Evanuk was out of jail on bond for simple battery and was supposed to stay away from the home.

Police said Evanuk barricaded himself inside the home with his three children, who are ages 4, 2 and 1.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) was contacted to respond to the residence.

Evanuk released the 4-year-old and the 1-year-old but threatened to harm the 2-year-old and burn the home down with them inside.

Officers went inside the home and found Evanuk armed with a knife. They told him to drop the knife, but a struggle broke out. An officer shot Evanuk, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation.
