Hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the state descended on Paulding County Monday for the funeral of a veteran deputy and his daughter.
The two were among four found dead in a Hiram home last week. They were the victims of a murder-suicide, according to investigators.
Investigators say Cpl. Sam Driskell's stepson, 21-year-old Felix Almonte, killed Driskell, his wife Muachin Driskell and their 12-year-old daughter Carolyn on Jan. 6. Altmonte then turned the gun on himself.
The bodies of Muachin Driskell and Almonte will be sent to the Dominican Republic for burial.
Sam Driskell’s father hugged the flag that covered his son’s casket as family, friends and deputies laid the army veteran and sheriff’s detective to rest.
The tragedy hit the sheriff especially hard.
“One of the best deputies I ever had,” said Sheriff Gary Gulledge.
Gulledge went to school with Driskell and considered him a friend more than an employee.
“Whatever you game him, he was happy with it. He just did his job and went to work every day,” said Gulledge.
Gulledge said Driskell won accolades from the GBI for his work with the sex offender registry. His funeral attracted officers from across the state. The procession to the church and burial stretched for miles.
Deputies from neighboring Cobb and Douglas Counties helped patrol the streets while Paulding deputies attended the funeral.
