FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — More than 1,000 ballots cast in Fulton County may need to be rescanned after election officials reported equipment problems at two polling locations Tuesday.

Fulton County election officials said 1,069 ballots were affected at Mechanicsville Library and Hugh Conley Recreation Center after they did not scan properly.

County officials said they plan to work with the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office on a process to rescan the ballots publicly with monitors present.

“There were two incidents that happened. Both were very minor,” Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts said. “One, for example, a woman in a wheelchair backed over a cord which caused a problem.”

The county also reported another Election Day issue involving false text messages sent to some voters claiming their polling locations had changed.

Election officials stressed that no Fulton County polling locations had changed. Officials have not said how many voters received the incorrect messages.

The issues were being closely watched by outside observers. Monitors from the U.S. Department of Justice and the Carter Center were observing Fulton County’s election process.

“Right now what we’re looking for is what we look for in 40 different countries in 128 elections around the world, making sure the process is free, fair and especially transparent,” Carter Center CEO Paige Alexander said.

The Fulton County Board of Elections was scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the Election Day issues, including how the 1,069 ballots would be handled.
