FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — A metro Atlanta city is testing its fire hydrants and servicing them in an ongoing basis and it’s telling residents that means their water might look different.
According to the City of Fayetteville, the fire department is servicing hydrants across the city.
While doing tests on each hydrant, sediment is sometimes disturbed, which officials say could make your water discolored, though it’s only temporary.
“If this occurs, we apologize for the inconvenience,” the city said in a statement.

During the maintenance, crews will inspect, lubricate, clean and paint hydrants as needed. They’ll also be installing reflective markers on each hydrant so they’re easier to find at night.
The city said crews are verifying each hydrant works so that, in an emergency, they know there’s enough water to get the job done.
Another perk of the maintenance is a possibility of lowering property insurance costs.
“In addition to the safety benefits, annual hydrant maintenance helps the Fire Department maintain and improve its Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating,” the city said. “Which can contribute to lower insurance premiums for both residential and commercial property owners.”
Maintenance activities in Fayetteville for fire hydrants will continue through the end of the year.
