SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Sandy Springs police say drivers have come forward after a woman was hit on Interstate-285, but they are still searching for others.
Gayla Walker died Thursday after several drivers struck her.
Police say they are still searching for the driver of a white pickup truck in connection with her death.
Channel 2's Liz Artz spoke with Walker's family who said she was only three miles from home Thursday when police say she was struck multiple times on I-285 in Sandy Springs.
"Everybody is in such a rush to get to where they got to go. People just don't care anymore, they don't," said Phyllis Wilson, the victim's sister.
Walker's sister and brother, who both live in other states, told Artz she was a disabled vet at one time who had high military security clearance.
"Those that came back from Afghanistan and Iraq. She debriefed them," said Maurice Scruggs, the victim's brother.
Scruggs told Artz that Walker's daughter called him with the news.
"It was sad. She didn't believe it," Scruggs said.
The 53-year-old grew up in Texas. Walker went to Michigan State University and had taken classes in Atlanta to launch an interior design business.
It's still a big mystery, Scruggs told Artz, as to why his sister was walking on I-285 before sun-up.
When asked if he thought Walker may have committed suicide, Scruggs said no.
Scruggs said Walker's son had spoken with her around 2:45 the morning she was hit, only hours before being struck.
He said the details of the conversation are unclear, but it sounded like maybe she was out.
"He heard music in the background," Scruggs said.
Walker's sister, some 800 miles away in Houston, Texas, now hopes someone will come forward with information.
"If you're a passerby, stop, don't just keep going. (There's) no reason her body had to be dismembered, no reason," Wilson said.
If you know anything about this incident you're asked to call the Sandy Springs police or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
