Douglas County’s top educator honored as Georgia Superintendent of the Year

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Douglas County School System is recognizing one of their own with one of the highest honors in education.

On Thursday, Trent North was named Georgia’s 2023 Superintendent of the Year.

As Georgia Superintendent of the Year, North will compete for the title of National Superintendent of the Year.

According to the release, there is a rigorous process in nominating leaders for Superintendent of the Year.

North has been with the district since 2017. He states that the recognition goes to the thousands of students throughout the district.

“This award represents the teachers and families that helped build a school system focused on strategic and continuous growth. Their support, coupled with leadership from the Board of Education, helped propel students to success. Good superintendents could not exist without good governance or dedicated staff members,” North said.

Before joining Douglas County, North was a middle school teacher, elementary and middle school principal and human resources director.

Board Chair Tracy Rookard says North is a transformational leader. “He inspires achievement because he sees the potential for excellence in every student. Through Superintendent North’s diligent efforts, the educational outcomes and experiences for our students have greatly increased.” He is a fierce advocate for our district and never fails to put students first. His positive impact is felt in all areas of our district. We are grateful for his visionary leadership and the endless learning opportunities he has created,” Rookard explained.

The School Superintendents Association will announce the winner for the National Superintendent of the Year in February 2023 at their conference in San Antonio, Texas.
