Gusting winds topple trees onto homes, causing headaches for homeowners

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Frigid gusting winds early Friday morning toppled trees onto homes in metro Atlanta.

Some of the worst damage happened on Woodshire Drive in Decatur.

A large tree sliced the roof of a home around 4.30 a.m., waking a husband and wife,

“Luckily, it didn’t hit the second story, but it’s caught right now. It’s in a precarious position because of the way the tree is pushing on the wall as it goes out.” said homeowner Hank Primas.

Primas said the size and weight of the tree sliced his living room in half.

“When it fell, it blew all the doors open, which I got closed not to keep the heat in the rest of the house,” said Primas.

A crew spent hours using a crane to lift the tree out of the large house.

Another tree toppled onto an apartment building on Par Four Drive in Lithonia. A tree also took down powerlines on Clifton Springs Road in Decatur, leaving several residents without power.

“Now I’m just trying to find a generator or some type of battery-operated space to warm the house. It’s cold.” said neighbor Vaughn Stfluer.

Stfluer said he was told his power might not be restored until midnight.
