DECATUR, Ga. — The Department of Veterans Affairs announced millions of dollars would be coming to Georgia to help homeless veterans.
The department awarded $43,277,657 in grants on Monday to 21 community organizations across the state. The funding is designated to assist veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness during fiscal year 2027.
The Georgia funding is part of a broader nationwide initiative totalizing $1.17 billion awarded across 680 organizations.
The grant distribution follows agency efforts in fiscal year 2025 that successfully housed 51,936 homeless veterans, marking the department’s highest annual total in seven years.

Grants will be distributed through two primary agency initiatives: the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program and the Grant and Per Diem program.
The Supportive Services for Veteran Families program focuses on preventing the imminent loss of homes, identifying new housing situations and rapidly rehousing veterans and their families who are currently experiencing homelessness.

The VA said its Grant and Per Diem program helps pay for transitional housing alongside supportive services and dedicated service centers to let veterans stay in their homes while receiving assistance.
The program also provides funding for specialized facilities tailored to the needs of women veterans, elderly individuals, frail residents and those experiencing chronic mental illness.
Dr. Connie Hampton serves as acting director of the Atlanta VA Health Care System.
She took over as acting director after the resignation of Kai Mentzer, who served two years at the Atlanta VA, in mid-August.
Hampton said local medical centers remain committed to offering safe housing and necessary support.
“VA medical centers across Georgia remain committed to ensuring Veterans have access to safe, stable housing and the supportive services they need to thrive,” Hampton said. “These grants strengthen our partnerships with community organizations and help us reach Veterans where they are, providing resources that make a meaningful difference in their lives.”
