On Thursday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation charged Amir Andrews, Dajuhn Bryant, Treonte Brintley, Messiah Hinson and Jayden King in the death of David Addo-Wright, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
The five inmates each face charges of malice murder, felony murder, felony aggravated assault, felony possession of items prohibited for possession and felony tampering with evidence.
The charges mark a development in the investigation into 24-year-old David Addo-Wright’s death, which began after he was found unresponsive inside a jail cell on Sept. 23.
According to the GBI, DeKalb County deputies found Addo-Wright with several wounds. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body was taken to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy was conducted.
The GBI was asked by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.

Addo-Wright’s family previously told Channel 2 Action News that he had been booked into the jail just days earlier and had posted bond, with his family expecting him to be released.
His father, Darren Wright, said GBI agents came to the family’s home to tell them Addo-Wright had been killed inside the jail.
The family’s attorney, Mawuli Davis, previously alleged that six men entered Addo-Wright’s cell and attacked him. Davis also alleged that locks on the cell were broken and that jail staff failed to conduct routine checks.
The attorney said the family believed it took more than 45 minutes, possibly close to an hour, for anyone to respond and render aid.
The family also said they received calls from people believed to be gang members inside the jail demanding money, which they believed could have been connected to the attack.

At the time, neither the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office nor the GBI commented on those allegations or identified any suspects.
The GBI said its investigation remains ongoing. The case will ultimately be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
“We appreciate the GBI for its work on this case,” said Sheriff Melody M. Maddox. “Our thoughts and condolences are with Mr. Addo-Wright’s family. We will continue to cooperate fully with the GBI as the investigation and prosecution move forward.”
