Former officer indicted on 20 more criminal charges against children

A former Cobb County police officer now faces more than 20 criminal charges tied to crimes investigators say he committed while on duty over a 2-year period.

The indictment lists 14 counts of sexual exploitation of children against Matthew Abbott. It says Abbott had numerous sexually explicit pictures and videos of children and sent messages that described acts of incest and other sexual acts.

The charges came after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Abbott last year.

Investigators said Abbott was on duty at a police precinct when he distributed obscene material involving sexually explicit messages about children.

They also said Abbott exposed himself in the parking lot of an elementary school and performed a sex act on himself in a church parking lot that same year.

Abbott was a Cobb County police officer when investigators say he committed the crimes.
