It is a busy area between Interstate 75 and Interstate 575. The 30-year master plan seeks to add more walking options and places to live to help connect the community.

Channel 2’s Michael Seiden reports that people he spoke with at the mall are curious about the idea.

Shoppers said they want more stores, more restaurants and more reasons to come here.

Now, district leaders are exploring how to bring homes, businesses and public spaces closer together.

For shopper Sydney Wait, a trip to the Town Center mall is a reminder of what she’d like to see return.

“I would like some more restaurants,” Wait said. “I would also like some more shops. It’s pretty dead in here. It’s a little sad.”

The Town Center Community Improvement District shared an early look at its next 30-year master plan.

It covers more than six square miles in Kennesaw and unincorporated Cobb County, including the mall.

Planners are exploring more walkable areas where people could live, shop and dine.

“I think that’d be super great,” Wait said. “Anything to get more people to come out and shop more.”

The district already helps fund roads, trails and public spaces through an additional tax on commercial properties.

Leaders point to the South Barrett reliever — a $62 million road project that opened in April, designed to reduce congestion along Barrett parkway.

Another phase of Lanie Park will add about an acre and a half of green space, including sidewalks, seating and trees.

But the long-term vision comes with challenges. Planners say housing affordability and the cost of construction will help determine what’s possible.
