CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Investigators say vandals raced around on a UTV in a Canton subdivision Saturday night, damaging private and public landscaping.
Part of the alleged vandalism was caught on cellphone video.
“They were going so fast and loud, my husband was asking, ‘Oh my God, what are they doing?’ They stopped here at the sidewalk, and they ripped up the road. They also hit a car going down the road. And one of them says, ‘Let’s get out of here,’” neighbor Joy Haggerty told Channel 2’s Tom Regan.
Neighbors say the vandals gained access to the gated Soliel Belmont Park community through a natural gas pipeline right of way.
One neighbor says the two young men on the vehicle ran over her beloved Flame Thrower Redbud tree that cost over $200.
“Here’s my tree, just toppled over and broken. It’s a total loss. These young folks that went over the tree didn’t care about it. There’s a clear path they could have used otherwise,” neighbor Cathy Spernow said.
Other neighbors say with some many public off road trails in Cherokee County, there’s no reason for the vandals to be racing through a subdivision.
Investigators ask anyone who may know the men seen in the video to contact the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office.
