ATLANTA — An Atlanta police sergeant has been relieved of duty and reassigned after surrendering to authorities on a family violence battery charge.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, Sgt. Ashlee Maltbia-Burgess turned herself in at the Fulton County Jail on Aug. 3 in connection with an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.
Police said Maltbia-Burgess has been charged with battery under Georgia’s family violence statute stemming from an off-duty incident that happened July 31.
Authorities said the victim told police that, while lying in bed, her wife, Maltbia-Burgess, had gotten into arguments all day.
The victim said while she was sleeping, Maltbia-Burgess stood up on the bed and jumped on her, picking her up by her neck and pinning her between the nightstand and the bed.

A child was present at the home but not involved in the incident.
Maltbia-Burgess was booked into the Fulton County Jail.
Following her surrender, the department relieved Maltbia-Burgess of duty and placed her in a non-enforcement role pending the outcome of the case.
The Atlanta Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards has also launched an internal investigation.
In a statement, the department said it takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and expects officers to uphold the highest standards of the profession.
