The Butts County Fire Department is mourning a veteran firefighter who died unexpectedly Friday.
John Sawyer retired in 2019 as a 27-year veteran with the department as a firefighter and EMT.
Sawyer also owned local businesses in Jackson Lake community, according to the department. He retired to focus more on the business and spend time with family.
“He was known for his sense of humor and his desire to help others when they needed it,” the department said in a statement.
