Busy road reopens hours after car knocks down utility pole, cuts power to hundreds

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A busy DeKalb County road is back open after being closed for most of Thursday after a car crashed into a utility pole and knocked out power for hundreds.

Channel 2’s Bryan Mims was on Bouldercrest Road near Clifton Church Road as Georgia Power crews worked well into the afternoon.

Police say a Honda Accord crashed into a utility pole just before 6 a.m. and the driver hopped out and ran from the scene. At one point, more than 530 customers lost electricity.

Kenneth El-Hefe lives across the street and told Mims that he, his fiancée Shehera Davis, and two school-age children were in bed when the crash happened.

“We just heard a lot of commotion, like a big boom,” El-Hefe said. “I thought it was actually like a transformer or something because that’s kind of like the same sound.”

He and Davis say they often hear drivers racing down the busy road.

“It’s a regular, I say,” Davis described. “They have the whole [road] blocked with kids and cars and people with their phones out just recording it.”

They are just grateful that no bystanders, including children waiting at the bus stop, were hurt.

Police say it’s unclear what led to the driver running off the road, but ask anyone who saw the crash or knows the driver to call DeKalb County police.
