A free training in Atlanta on Sunday is using the game to teach young people to slow down, think ahead and consider the consequences before making their next move — on the board and in life.

Be Someone, Inc. is hosting its free Strategic Leadership Chess Training from noon to 2 p.m. at the Signia by Hilton Atlanta.

The organization’s message is simple: “Brains Beat Bullets 24/7/365” and “Think Thrice and Save-a-Life.”

Dr. Orrin “Checkmate” Hudson, the organization’s founder and CEO, says chess can help young people build critical-thinking, decision-making, patience and self-control skills while encouraging peaceful conflict resolution.

“Before you make a move on the chessboard, think about the consequences. Life works the same way,” Hudson said. “Stop, think, and make your next move your best move. Prevention is better than detention.”

According to Be Someone, Inc., the organization has trained more than 120,000 young people, using chess to help them think ahead, make better decisions and choose peace over violence.

The free event is open to children, teens, families and community members.
