Inmate who escaped from Georgia hospital dies days after return to custody

BIBB COUNTY, Ga. — An inmate who escaped custody from custody at a Macon hospital and was later taken back into custody has died, according to WGXA.

Ha’Keem Romaire Barrett, 20, fled from Atrium Health Navicent earlier on Feb. 4 as he was being treated for a medical issue.

Barrett got sick and went into a bathroom, where he climbed through the ceiling and made his way to a hallway.

He then ran from the hospital.

The deputy who was with Barrett was placed on leave the day after Barrett’s escape.

Barrett was found at his sister’s home on Sunday when someone called 911 to report that he was unresponsive. He was returned to the hospital by police in critical condition.

On Tuesday, Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said Barrett died due to complications related to his escape.

Barrett had been in jail for multiple armed robbery and aggravated assault charges for a 2019 crime spree.
