ATLANTA — Data from vehicle safety tracker CARFAX shows that the metro Atlanta area and the overall State of Georgia both rank high on the list when ti comes to places with lots of vehicles where recalls haven’t been repaired.
According to a recent CARFAX study, there are 58.1 million vehicles in the United States that have an automotive recall that hasn’t been fixed, a 16% increase from 2023. The company said that’s equal to about 20% of all cars in the country.
“Drivers should be aware of the recalls on their vehicles, especially those with two or more. Addressing them can save lives and protect your wallet in the long run,” Paul Nadjarian, General Manager of CARFAX Car Care said. “Fortunately, with free monitoring services such as CARFAX Car Care, consumers can leverage the tools they need to easily keep track of and fix these issues. In Georgia, there are 509,000 vehicles that have two or more open, unfixed recalls.
However, CARFAX told Channel 2 Action News that those numbers are separate from the metro Atlanta area, as it refers to the designated market area (DMA) mapped by Nielsen.
For Atlanta, CARFAX said there were actually another 609,000 vehicles with two or more open, unfixed recalls. When focusing on just any car with an unfixed, open recall, Atlanta has 2.5 million vehicles in need of some type of repair, according to CARFAX.

Both data points contribute to Atlanta’s rank as third in the nation for most vehicles with at least one unfixed recall, and vehicles with at least two.
As for why Atlanta’s DMA is separated from the Georgia total, CARFAX said it was due to the market area including portions of both Alabama and North Carolina.
While a more area-specific list of which recalls are still active wasn’t available, CARFAX said half of the top ten recalls seen nationally are related to airbags.
Among the 50 United States, Georgia is ranked fifth. Here’s the top 10:
