Part of Old Fourth Ward building collapses after huge cracks appear

ATLANTA — An Atlanta building that once housed a popular lounge is on the verge of collapse after cracks appeared on the side of the building.

On Wednesday, part of the building collapsed.

Authorities blocked the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and Boulevard in the Old Fourth Ward for hours because of concerns the entire building could collapse.

On Tuesday, firefighters evacuated other nearby businesses as a precaution.

A large crack appeared in the side of the building located at 483 Edgewood Avenue Southeast Tuesday morning. The building use to house the restaurant and lounge called the Sound Table.

Neighbors told Channel 2′s Tom Jones a heavy piece of equipment at a nearby construction site shook their businesses and they believe that had something to do with the cracks in the building.

A business owner said he contacted authorities after noticing the cracks.

“I saw that crack and nobody was doing anything so I called 911,” said business owner Adonai Deglel.

Crews put a fence around the building and shored it up as best they can. Arrangements will be made to bring it down.
