Mothers set up memorial for 6-month-old killed in drive-by shooting

ATLANTA — Two mothers say the shooting death of a 6-month-old boy disturbed them so much they drove from another county to place a memorial to the child.

This comes just one day after police made an arrest in the case.

That man had previous run-ins with police. Now they are still searching for anyone else who was involved.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones was there as the parents also put up signs urging people to stop the gun violence. They say we all have to do a better job of protecting children.

“It may be your child next. Now what you going to say?” Adrienne Couther said.

Couther and Georgetta Morton said they are sick and tired of hearing about another child lost to gun violence.

They say people used to make sure to protect kids — and that has changed.

“They don’t care who they kill, they just want to pull the trigger,” Morton said.

They say they were heartbroken after hearing about the shooting death of 6-month-old Grayson Fleming-Gray on Monday afternoon.

Morton told Jones that she saw his interview with Grayson’s mother.

“I saw nobody standing out here with her yesterday,” Morton said.

She also didn’t see a memorial for Grayson at the scene. So Morton and Couther drove from DeKalb County to put up a memorial and put up signs that say all children matter and gun violence must stop.

“We got to stop, and our children are growing up and this is the environment that we’re raising them in,” Couther said.

Jones was also in court Wednesday when a judge said the man accused of killing Grayson, Dequasie Little, would not be getting out of jail for now.

Little chose not to attend this hearing.

“We will not be granting bond in this case due to that reason and he is a danger to the community,” Magistrate Court Judge Elizabeth George ruled.

Police say Little was a passenger in the Jeep Cherokee that was traveling at high speeds when it opened fire on this black car.

One of the bullets hit and killed Grayson.

Couther lost a child to violence in 2002. She said it’s a pain that never goes away.

“It took me years to get to this point and I still cry,” Couther said.

Jones said he saw people driving by taking a look at the memorial.

One woman even brought a teddy bear because she wanted to contribute.

Little faces murder and aggravated assault with intent to murder.

He also had his probation revoked on another aggravated assault charge Wednesday.
