Family says young man shot, killed got caught in crossfire of argument at northwest Atlanta event

ATLANTA — The family of 21-year-old Akquan Williams is speaking only to Channel 2. He was killed while he was out with friends at an event in northwest Atlanta.

“I was called about 12:30,” said Akil Williams.

It was a call that Akil Williams said no father wants to get.

“One of his good friends called me and the way he called me, I immediately knew, because he took a pause.”

Williams said he knew his son was dead. He immediately rushed to the scene on Bishop Street in northwest Atlanta early Monday morning.

“I drove all the way to Atlantic Station and the whole thing was blocked off.”

Williams said at first, he was provided very little information.

Police told Channel 2 that one man was shot and the victim was a Black man between the ages of 20-25. Police also said based on preliminary information that the victim probably wasn’t from Atlanta.

Williams said his son was more than just a vague description.

“He had a name. His name is Akquan Williams. He was 21 years old and he’s from Metro Atlanta.”

Williams said his son had a name and he had a family who loved him.

Williams said he was told that there was an event on Bishop Street and an argument started over a girl, between some young men. The men started shooting and his son was hit and killed in the crossfire.

“Two in the chest and one in the stomach,” said Williams.

Kamila Williams, Akquan’s aunt, said this incident has been tough for the family.

“It’s devastating for our family, that this is the new reality,” she said.

Aidan is Akquan’s little brother. He echoes that pain.

“I just talked to him, the night before. We had a good conversation and then the next day, he’s just gone.”
