Hispanic Heritage Month: ‘Art Addict’ threads Puerto Rican heritage through Atlanta United scarf

ATLANTA — Continuing the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Channel 2 Action News is taking a closer look at the latest Atlanta United Scarf design.

The newest design was unveiled at the game this past weekend.

Channel 2’s Jorge Estevez spoke to the artist behind the design about what inspired her.

Lisette “Art Addict” Correa is the artist behind the scarf. She’s also well-known in the metro Atlanta area for her murals along the Atlanta Beltline.

“I honest felt just so honored,” Correa said about being chosen to design the scarf.

She told Estevez that the design’s vision was based on her belief in encouraging understanding and community.

“I believe that bringing people together to understand our story is also a part of my mission to create a better world,” Correa said.

When Atlanta United wanted to capture the excitement in the stands for their latest scarf design, they chose Correa.

During a photo shoot promoting Atlanta United’s commitment to Hispanic Heritage Month, you can see Correa’s Puerto Rican roots shine through.

It’s present and right up front for the design with the “Somos Atlanta” collection, which means “We Are Atlanta.”

The scarf features designs with a lot of meaning, like the original Puerto Rican flag, images of the old Morro Fort in San Juan and Puerto Rico’s unofficial United Nations mascot, Coqi.

Jose Hadathy, the manager of creative design at Atlanta United and the artist behind the city’s FIFA World Cup posters, was just as enthusiastic as Correa for the team’s choice.

“They’re the ones who bring the atmosphere that everyone’s grown to love,” Hadathy said. “So just to be, [to] say thank you to our community and have them feel represented,” was very important.

Correa said even with her new work, like the scarf and her murals on the Beltline, she’s staying true to herself.

“I’m still doing what I did from the beginning of my career, which is representing Latinos,” Correa said.

Correa told Estevez that as the “Art Addict,” she recognizes the diversity among the tens of thousands of cheering soccer fans, but can’t help but pinch herself that this year, she gets to wrap them up with the love she has for her heritage.

The scarves and other Somos Atlanta apparel is available for purchase at Atlanta United games or online.
