Flight makes emergency landing at Hartsfield-Jackson after passenger found with box cutters

ATLANTA — A disruptive passenger found with a box cutter caused a flight to make an emergency landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The incident occurred Friday night around 9:30 p.m.

A spokesperson for Frontier Airlines said the flight was coming from Cincinnati and heading to Tampa.

Officials said a passenger was being disruptive and someone on the flight spotted the box cutter in the passenger’s possession.

The plane was diverted to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Following a search of the suspect, a second box cutter was found in the passenger’s carry-on, the release states.

The FBI and Atlanta police arrested the suspect and the flight was canceled.

No passengers or crew members were injured.

A new flight was scheduled for Saturday morning to get passengers to their original destination, Tampa.

TSA sent the following statement to Channel 2:

“TSA takes its role in transportation security very seriously. The situation with the Frontier flight is under investigation with the US Attorney’s Office, as they are the lead federal agency in this matter. TSA has started an internal review of the incident by viewing CCTV, airport security checkpoint processes and operations.”

Authorities said that blades are not allowed in the cabin but are permitted in checked luggage.
