ATLANTA — Interstate 285 in Southwest Atlanta is now open to drivers again, but it did not come without some drama.
The interstate was blocked for construction from 7 p.m. Friday to around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, which was about two and a half hours after the road was supposed to reopen this morning.
GDOT told Channel 2’s Richard Elliot that a contractor named Webber missed the deadline.
Those delays impacted Bruce Price.
“Well, yeah, it’s irritating, you know? Things happen, but the key is communication,” Price said.
He lives in Johns Creek but is renovating a Southwest Atlanta home. Price said the two-hour delay made him miss an important meeting with his contractor.
“We’re on a tight schedule to close by this Wednesday. So, because I missed a contractor this morning, now I’ve got to reschedule, and he’s not sitting around waiting for me. He’s got other jobs. So, it just has a rippling effect,” Price said.

In a statement, GDOT apologized for the delay and said Webber told them as late as Sunday night that they’d make the deadline.
But they didn’t.
“Moving forward, the department will be re-evaluating production rates provided by the contractor to prevent further closure extensions,” GDOT said in its statement.
Cobb County driver Shannon Byrd-Crossley told Elliot that the delay made her late for work.
“We were a little late. So, a few of us were late for work this morning just because of the mix-up,” Byrd-Crossley said.
GDOT said it is very sensitive to getting the roads open in time.
Elliot did reach out to Webber for comment on this story. He’s still waiting to receive one.
