Andrew Young embraces Ukraine in prayer service honoring his 90th birthday

ATLANTA — Dozens gathered Wednesday to celebrate the life and legacy of Atlanta’s own Andrew Young. He turns 90 years old this week.

Channel 2′s Dave Huddleston was at the service where Young himself gave the sermon.

During his prayer service, Young wore the colors of the Ukrainian flag and said that during these troubled times we have to come together and pray for the world, the Ukrainians and even Russia.

An interfaith choir sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the Black National Anthem, at the Peace and Reconciliation prayer service honoring Young.

The former Atlanta mayor and United Nations ambassador turns 90 years old Saturday and there are several services, including this prayer program from various religions, to honor Young.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens spoke about Young and said that when he was in public school, Young inspired him to go into politics.

“I wanted to be that man, because you resembled me, and you gave me a lot of hope and it led to me wanting to be mayor,” Dickens said.

The service was scheduled for 90 minutes to honor Young’s 90th birthday.

Before the service ended, Young, wearing the colors of the Ukrainian flag, gave a sermon focused on loving one another.

“Binds us together as one people, under God on a loving planet that somehow survives, all the trials and tribulations and terrors of our time and every time,” Young said.

Young said that even during his time in the Civil Rights movement, he prayed for those who hurt him.

He said love is the way to see beyond ourselves in order to help others.
