‘All day and all night:’ Community says Atlanta neighbor’s pet roosters are keeping them awake

ATLANTA — A trio of roosters in a backyard coop are upsetting neighbors in a northwest Atlanta community who believe the loud birds violate the city’s animal noise ordinance.

“They literally crow all day and all night. No one in my house has slept a full night in months because of the noise from the roosters,” said neighbor Felicia Harris.

Harris lives on North Peek Street. She said her next-door neighbor got the roosters and some chickens about six months ago. She and other neighbors have complained to city officials, but nothing has been done.

“No one is taking accountability for addressing or enforcing the noise ordinance on the books,” said Harris.

Channel 2′s Tom Regan spoke with the owners of the roosters, but he didn’t want to show his face on camera. He said police and city officials have come to his home to investigate, but have not issued any noise violation citations.

“The city of Atlanta has come out here, and they said I’m in compliance,” said William Hornsby.

Harris, who is studying to become a nurse, says the constant crowing is affecting her ability to concentrate on her work. Typically, roosters crow at or just before dawn, but she says the birds next door get an early start.

“They started at 2:30 in the morning and they crowed until 5:30. I had an exam that day,” said Harris.

She said she would continue to appeal for help from the city to quiet the birds. The rooster owner said he is willing to compromise and remove two of the three roosters from his property.

Channel 2 Action News reached out for a comment from the city’s code enforcement office but has not heard back.
