Atlanta airport seeing big increase in traffic thanks to spring break, vaccinations

ATLANTA — Spring break is officially on at the world’s busiest airport. More people are flying despite health warnings that are in place.

A record number of passengers, since the start of the pandemic, passed through TSA checkpoints Sunday.

At Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the numbers are expected to climb again today.

Monday will mark the 12th straight day in row that TSA will see more than a million passengers nationwide pass through security checkpoints.

The hum of activity is gradually coming back to Atlanta as more and more people get vaccinated and get back in the air

Sunday set a new high of more than 1.5 million passing through TSA checkpoints across the country.

“I don’t think Covid going on like that anymore,” said traveler Ziare Perry.

Perry, from Indiana, came to Atlanta to celebrate her birthday over the weekend, but originally planned to go to Miami, where streets were packed with spring breakers.

“I know I should have went. I’m mad. I thought they was closing. I would have been down there instead,” Perry said.

Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach checked with the TSA and while numbers are still off by about 40 percent, they are predicting a boom in travel as vaccinations roll out and we get into the summer travel season.

TSA officials didn’t have exact projections, but they plan to hire 6,000 new agents, both part time and full-time workers.
