2 Georgia military bases could get new names

ATLANTA — Two Georgia military bases that currently honor Confederate leaders are among several that could soon have new names.

Those bases are Fort Gordon and Fort Benning.

The federal naming commission recommended changing Fort Gordon to Fort Eisenhower after the former president and five-star general.

Fort Benning could become Fort Moore after Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and his late wife Julia Moore.

Lt. Moore fought in Korea and Vietnam, while his wife supported military families at home.

The Pentagon is expected to act on the commission’s recommendations, including the renaming of military bases and Department of Defense Assets, by 2024, which will have an estimated cost of $62.5 million, according to the final report.
