CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Firefighters are still battling a fire that destroyed a huge Lake House in Clayton County.
The fire started just after 6 a.m. Thursday, at 2520 Emerald Drive in Jonesboro. The house sits on Lake Spivey.
Officials say an 87-year-old woman lived there alone, but had a caretaker that stayed with her at night who likely saved her life. Both got out before the flames grew.
A neighbor directly across Lake Spivey shot a video as the massive three-story Lake home was engulfed in fire.
Witnesses told Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach that the caretaker woke up to the sound of sizzling and crackling of fire and was able to wake the homeowner.
“We saw her caregiver’s car go out, but didn’t see Maddy, afraid she had been caught in the house,” neighbor Dyane Atkins.
“She got out with her caretaker and actually got her car out of the garage and got her little puppy out with her, so that’s a godsend,” neighbor Sam Black said.
It is unclear where or how the fire started. The home was about 10,000-12,000 square feet, and all that is left is the garage and the boathouse.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion, but Channel 2 was told that he is stable and will be OK.
