‘Local celebrity’ police horse Sgt. Bobby dies after years of service

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah Police Department (SPD) is mourning the sudden loss of one of its horses.

Sgt. Bobby, a 22-year-old horse, died at the Mounted Unit stables early Saturday.

“We cannot even begin to describe what a truly great horse he was and how much he will be missed,” said SCpl. Ann Sosbe of SPD Mounted Patrol. “He was a local celebrity in the Savannah area and was the backbone of the unit. In the more than 19 years that he served the Savannah Police Department, he met thousands of Savannah residents and tourists.”

Sgt. Bobby joined the department in 2004 when he was 3 years old.

Over the last few years, due to his age, he was transitioned into a semi-retired state, spending most of his time at the stables.

Sgt. Bobby was the longest-serving horse for SPD.
