ATLANTA,None — A political candidate and a political party are fighting over furniture.
Angela Moore ran for Georgia secretary of state last year. She said the DeKalb Democratic Party won't return the more than $10,000 worth of furniture she says she loaned the organization.
"If you loaned me something, it is my responsibility to give it back," Moore told Channel 2's Tom Jones. Moore said the DeKalb Democratic Party doesn't seem to understand that concept.
Moore said it was late last year, right before the November election, when the party asked candidates to donate items for an office it had set up at North DeKalb Mall for candidates to meet and strategize. Moore said she considered it an honor to help out.
"I didn't mind donating some of my items on loan," she said.
She showed Channel 2 a list of items she says she loaned: a wooden desk, a metal credenza, a fax machine, file cabinets, office desks and chairs.
Moore said the furniture cost her about $10,000 of her own money.
Channel 2 asked if she made it clear that the furniture was a loan. "Absolutely. And I put it in writing," Moore said.
Moore then showed Channel 2 an invoice where she wrote "loan" on a lists of items, and she showed where a Democratic Party worker signed it.
After the election, and after Moore lost, she said she began asking for the return of her furniture.
"Every month I called and asked, and I never got a solid answer," she said.
Jones called the DeKalb Democratic Party chairperson inquiring about the furniture. Sandra Austin said she didn't know where it was.
Austin then said Moore donated the furniture to her organization and said she couldn't comment further.
A mall manager told Channel 2 that after the Democratic Party moved out, it left furniture there.
The manager said after repeated calls to remove it, the mall threw some of the furniture away.
Moore is not happy.
"I do intend on pursuing this. I would like to have my items back,"' she said.
Austin said Moore has harassed DeKalb Democratic Party workers over the issue. Moore said she has called and emailed workers because she wants her furniture back. She says she may sue.
