DeKalb Neighborhood Fears Sinking Homes

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Residents in a Dekalb County neighborhood fear that their homes are sinking.

"We have to come out of pocket to try to repair this," said homeowner Gus Riviere.

He and his neighbors are fed up with deep holes in the grass and buckling driveways around Stone Mountain's Stone Breeze subdivision.

"I noticed paint cans, rusted paint cans siding and all kinds of wood in the whole," said Riviere.

Neighbors told Channel 2's Erica Byfield they suspect a builder built their homes on a bed of trash.

"I think the people who built the homes should be held responsible," said resident Pamela Marciunas.

The homes were built in the late 1980's and early 1990's by three builders. Residents said the first builder went bankrupt and they cannot get in touch with the other two.

"It's upsetting because I'm losing all of my land space here," homeowner Hilary Gibbs said.

Riviere told Byfield they are stuck.

"Financially, I can't afford to do it myself and it's gotten to the point where I can't enjoy my back yard," Riviere said.

A Dekalb County representative said he would look into the claims, but in general, the county is not responsible for problems on private property.

"When you buy a home, I can understand doing repairs inside the house and outside and ever year you are gradually doing the same thing, something is wrong," Marciunas said.
