Police ID UGA student found dead in dorm room as David Braun

ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia Police Department said an autopsy could not determine what killed a student found dead inside a dorm room.

Police identified the student as 21-year-old David Peacock Braun of Marietta.

Police Chief Jimmy Williamson told Channel 2 Action News the police department got a call from housing officials about the welfare of a student.

"The exam could not offer anything conclusive. We're going to have to wait for toxicology to hope that will provide some cause for his death," Williamson said.

Officers found the body of a male student inside a locked dorm room in Vandiver Hall around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Wednesday morning, police identified the student as Braun, of Marietta.

Police said preliminary reports do not indicate foul play and there is nothing to indicate a threat or safety concern at the university.

Students told Channel 2's Liz Artz that it is the third student death in a week. The other two were from natural causes.

"Campuses are just microcosms of society, so if there are tragic things that are happening in other parts of the world or our country they happen on campus too. We just don't see them in the same frequency because of our demographics," Williamson said.
