Truck driver shot at by complete stranger in road rage incident in Dekalb County

Dekalb police chief says they’ve had 27 road rage incidents in 2022 -- and just 3 arrests.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A truck driver says he was shot at while driving home from work in DeKalb County last month.

Stewart said on March 23, a passenger of a small vehicle fired shots at his truck as he drove on I-20 westbound in Dekalb County.

He said he was driving home in his work truck when another vehicle pulled in front of him and a passenger popped out of the sunroof and made angry gestures.

“He was just making the gestures like he was gonna do something,” Stewart said. “So, I threw my hands up like what are you talking about?”

Stewart guessed the driver was mad because he was driving slowly. Seconds later, gunfire erupted, hitting his truck twice.

“There was one in the passenger door. If it had of came through, it would of probably hit me in my shoulder,” Stewart said. “The one that hit the load that I was actually carrying, if there wasn’t a box there, it probably would of hit me in the back of the head.”

Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Mark Winnie discovered this is not the first time Stewart has been targeted while driving.

In 2013, Stewart said a suspected drunk driver in a truck hit him as he rode his motorcycle on I-285.

“He drug me from Bouldercrest all the way to Flat Shoals,” said Stewart.

Dekalb Police Chief Mirtha Romas said Dekalb has had 27 road rage incidents this year with just three arrests.

“We have issued 500 citations,” Ramos said. “What we’re trying really is just to provide high visibility and deter these acts from happening.”

DeKalb police have deployed units to roll down highways or sit on the shoulder under blue lights to try to curb the problem.

Stewart said he’s fortunate to be alive.

“I thank God for still being here,” he said.
