White House, USPS wrapping up plans to ship COVID-19 test kits nationwide

The White House and the U.S. Postal Service are finalizing plans to deliver 500 million COVID-19 test kits to households nationwide, according to a published report.

The Washington Post, quoting four anonymous sources, said the move would help kick-start a key part of President Joe Biden’s response to the omicron variant.

According to the newspaper, the administration will launch a website that will allow people to request the rapid tests. Officials are hoping to begin shipping the test kits by mid-January, the Post reported.

Test manufacturers and distributors seeking to provide a share of the tests have submitted proposals to the government, the newspaper reported. According to one of the anonymous sources, the administration awarded its first contract toward the purchase.

An official announcement could be made as early as next week, the Post reported.
