Giant Burmese python captured during Hurricane Ian cleanup

NAPLES, Fla. — Sheriff’s Office deputies from two Florida counties helped capture a massive 14-foot-long Burmese python found during Hurricane Ian cleanup in East Naples.

On Oct. 26, deputies with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office and Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a call when a resident reported seeing a large Burmese python in the bushes between two homes.

The snake was humanely euthanized, deputies said in a social media post.

Burmese pythons are an invasive species found in the Everglades. Some pythons measuring more than 15 feet long have been caught in the Everglades by snake hunters.

Because of the snake’s invasive status, it can be “humanely killed on private lands” with no permit required, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s website.

In June, a record-breaking 215-pound, 18-foot-long Burmese python was found in Florida’s Everglades.
