ATLANTA — Despite rain earlier in the day, the weekend ahead is going to be clear and sunny.
“We just have to get through tonight,” said Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns. “We’ll see a few spotty light sprinkles or a light rain shower or mist out there.”
By about 9 p.m. Friday evening, most of the showers will have moved out of the area.
Drier air is also expected to move in throughout the evening, ushering in a nice weekend.
“As we go through tonight and tomorrow, as the cold front moves on through, dry comfortable air moves in just in time for your weekend,” Burns said.
Looking ahead to Saturday, expect clearing skies with lots of sunshine and highs around 78. A similar situation for Sunday, with a cool start but a high of 77.
Graduations postponed due to weather
The rainy weather earlier in the day Friday caused a headache for several school districts planning to hold outdoor high school graduation ceremonies.
Fayette County students and parents had to go to another county Friday evening for their ceremony.
Seniors from Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone ended up having their graduation at a church nearly 30 miles away in Austell instead of walking across their football field.
"It's been a smooth move, a smooth transition," Sandy Creek Principal Robert Hunter told Channel 2’s Aaron Diamant.
It's also been a scramble, but staff from Sandy Creek say they're ready for Friday night's graduation.
"We could have had it in the gym but, of course, we would have had to limit the number of guests that could have accompanied the graduates," Hunter said.
Instead, seniors will walk across the stage of the Word of Faith Family Worship Cathedral in Austell.
The venue seats 4,000, which is plenty of room for the 240 graduates and their friends and family.
"All of my family wouldn't have been able to see it without it moving to here," said senior Josiah Duncan.
Students and parents say they found out Wednesday about the move and it did cause some problems.
"I was going to have some friends come but they can't because it's a little bit more distance, but my family can still come," said senior Anna Barcala.
"If we would have found out earlier, I feel like we could have got more people to come than we will tonight," senior Jeffrey Coto-Jones told Diamant.
The school's principal said the weather forced them to be flexible and they listened to parents who said the school gym would be too small.
"This is how it is in this business. You have to be prepared to make changes sometimes on the fly. Things can happen," Hunter said.
The graduation ceremony is scheduled to begin in about 45 minutes. The school provided buses for students who weren't riding with their parents.
