Wounded RaceTrac clerk recovering after violent robbery

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A RaceTrac store clerk shot during a robbery Tuesday said he was only shot once, but his injuries were like three bullet wounds.

Joshua Holmes, 24, said the incident happened so fast he didn't realize what was going on at first.

"Like a dream; like I couldn't believe it was happening and why," said Holmes.

She interviewed Holmes as he was preparing to leave for the Sheriff's Office Wednesday to be interviewed by detectives. He was one of two clerks working at a Fairburn Road RaceTrac in Douglasville when it was robbed the day before.

"I've been there three years, never worried people are joyful my customers I know them joyful," Holmes said.

The 24-year-old was shot during the robbery for no apparent reason. He told Artz he complied with all the robbers' demands.

"No hesitation; I didn't resist nothing, pow open fire," Holmes said.

Investigators say Holmes and 22-year-old Troia Tillman were working when three men burst through the back door.

The men, who Holmes said were wearing ski masks and a hood, were after cigarettes. Surveillance video shows them stashing dozens of cartons into bags. Holmes' aunt could not believe how quickly the men were to pull the trigger, injuring both clerks.

"For somebody to lose their life over cigarettes…really?"

Both clerks were shot once and are expected to be OK, though Holmes says his injury is like three holes instead of one. His aunt described how the bullet shattered.

"It went in by his naval came out below naval came out groin area," said the victim's aunt, Edith Holmes.

Edith Holmes says RaceTrac has been very supportive through this even offering to pay medical expenses, but they want the gunmen caught before it happens again. There is a $10,000 reward for an arrest and conviction of the suspects in this case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Douglas County Sheriff's Office or the Douglasville Police Department.
