Woman sues Opera nightclub over alleged sexual assault streamed on Facebook Live

ATLANTA — A woman whose alleged sexual assault inside a popular Midtown nightclub was seen on Facebook has filed a lawsuit, claiming the club did not have adequate security the night of the attack.

On Tuesday, the victim’s attorneys alleged Opera nightclub failed to monitor certain areas of the club during the Jan. 19 sexual assault.

Jasmine Eiland spoke publicly for the first time during a news conference Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes was there, where she obtained the documents that explain why the woman is suing the nightclub.

Eiland was celebrating her birthday the night of the assault and was already streaming on Facebook Live when she said she was attacked.

She and her attorney, Chris Stewart, claim that there was not enough security in the club that night.

Stewart said there was only one-fourth of the security that should have been working that night and he believes that because it was a hip-hop concert, the owners did not staff it correctly.

Stewart said he tried to get his questions answered about security and get his issue resolved without litigation, but when the new club owners ignored him, he scheduled the news conference.

Eiland said Tuesday that it took a lot just to agree to come forward.

"I'm going to continue to fight. I’m a victim but I’m a survivor as well. I just want to thank everybody,” Eiland said during the news conference.

Dominique Williams, 34, turned himself in to authorities on Jan. 29 in connection with the alleged sexual assault. He faces an aggravated sodomy charge.

Eiland told police someone put drugs in her drink and then sexually assaulted her on the dance floor.

Video of the sexual assault has since been removed from Facebook.
